MUSIC MONDAY (Female Edition)

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY

This is one of my favorite Janet Jackson tunes. I had the biggest crush on her for years, and I attribute it to this video. So hot!

EXPRESS YOURSELF

Classic Madonna. No one has ever accused her of not speaking up. She’s a talented, brutally frank woman, and that powerful combination has paid huge dividends for her career.

REHAB

I love Amy Winehouse’s voice. Her sound is a great throwback and nod to the singers of the 60s, and the great tunes they created.

JUST FINE

Mary J. Blige has been through so much, and music has been her way of expressing the range of dramatic peaks and valleys that have characterized her life. I love this woman.

MUSIC MONDAY

TAKE ON ME (1985)

This is one of the great tunes of the early 80s. The video’s use of rotoscoping (a combination of pencil-sketch animation and live-action) was groundbreaking for its day.

IT’S TRICKY (1987)

There was no hip hop group that ruled the 80s like Run DMC. They helped to define hip hop with songs like this one.

BOUNCIN’ BACK (BUMPIN’ ME AGAINST THE WALL) (2001)

This is one of the most underrated songs in hip hop history. It rocked. Listen closely, and you can hear references to the mood of the country just after 9/11.

HEAVEN (2004)

Awesome group. The Los Lonely Boys have a great sound. This is one of those songs you can play every Summer at a garden party.

MUSIC MONDAY (Halloween Edition)

THRILLER (1984)

This is Michael Jackson’s signature song. It remains one of the most enduring tunes of all-time, and according to MTV, the greatest video of all time.

SOMEBODY’S WATCHING ME (1984)

Rockwell tune is making big money because the insurance company Geico is using it for a few of their current commercials. In fact, listen closely and you’ll hear Michael Jackson lending some background vocals.

GHOSTBUSTERS (1984)

This remains Ray Parker Jr.’s biggest hit ever. He has reinvented himself as a successful jazz guitarist. But he will always be known for this tune.

EVERYBODY (BACKSTREET’S BACK) (1997)

I normally don’t post videos from boy bands and bubble gum pop groups on my blog for Music Monday. But this video seems very appropriate for Halloween.
